o I already have a computer. How can I tell if RCT will run on my machine?

Check the RCT hardware requirements. To verify that your Windows computer has a sound card and microphone:
At the Windows Start button choose: Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment(or Multimedia)-> Sound Recorder.
Press the red Record button to record your voice. Then press stop. You should have seen colored (usually green) sound waves displayed in the sound recorder window. Hit the Playback button (right arrow). Did it play back what you recorded? If the answer is yes then you have a working sound card and microphone. If not, you may only need an external microphone, such as a Radio Shack lapel mic (catalog 33-3013, $25).

o What laptop should I use with RCT?

We recommend brand-name small laptops (two to four pounds) with active matrix/TFT screen and lithium ion battery. RCT/Mac and RCT/Windows are equally accurate and easy to use, so stick with the platform you're familiar with or that your friends use (so they can help you learn to use your computer).

o Can you recommend a specific Windows laptop model?

Currently we use and recommend laptops from Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Toshiba and Sony. Whatever type of laptop you buy, make sure it has Windows 95/98 sound recording capability.

For starters, here are a few of the many laptops on which RCT Windows runs:

Toshiba 3010, 3015, 3020, 3025, 3100 (2,9 lbs/1,32 kg)
Toshiba Libretto 100, 100ct or 110ct (2,2 lbs/1 kg)
IBM Thinkpad 240
Sharp Actius PC-A250
Sony VAIO 505 (2.9lbs/1.32 kg)
Sony VAIO PCG-C1X (aka "PictureBook", 2,5 lbs/1,13 kg)
Fujitsu LifeBook B112 (2,65 lbs/1,2 kg)

CDW (CDW.com) in Chicago often has the best prices on these machines. 1-800-453-4239

o My RCT Windows computer seems to be a little deaf - sometimes Chameleon 2 or CyberEar doesn't seem to hear very well.

Answer 1: Your Windows sound recording volume needs to be adjusted, usually it is either muted or needs to be turned up. See the Record Volume page for how to adjust this, or see the "Record volume.txt" file on your RCT disk (CD or floppy disk 1).

Answer 2: Are you using RCT 3.0.3f5 or later? If not this version will help many Windows machines get much better response. This improved version has adjustable "threshold" response and is more sensitive to start with. See the Download page for details on how to download this free RCT/Win upgrade.

o Will you be continuing development of RCT on both Macintosh and Windows platform?

Yes! From now on Mac and Windows versions of RCT will be virtually identical and upgraded together. We are careful to follow the user interface guidelines native to each platform. We plan full compatiblitiy with MacOS X aka "Carbon" due out in 2000, and Windows 2000.

o Can I run RCT on a desktop computer?

RCT runs on a desktop Macintosh or Windows computers as long as they meet RCT's hardware requirements.

o I've heard that tuning machines are hard to use. Is Reyburn CyberTuner difficult to learn to tune with?

No. We've spent a lot of time making RCT easy to learn and use. RCT comes with online help, an electronic and printed manual, toll free support numbers, and email support. We even have a private listserv on the internet just for RCT users.

o If I bought Reyburn CyberTuner could I tune my own piano?

Yes! You just need to learn how first, but learning tuning is not easy. To learn to tune well takes A LONG TIME! Having a RCT doesn't make you a tuner, but RCT is an excellent teaching tool.

To learn to tune you will need to take lessons from a professional piano tuner-technician.

Another place to learn to tune is a correspondence course: Randy Potter School of Piano Technology
