Pocket RCT Hardware Requirements & Model Recommendations

(Last updated September 27, 2011)

Pocket RCT hardware requirements
Microsoft Windows Mobile 4.x, 5.x or 6.x*
*Windows Mobile 5.0 or later is recommended.
200MHz or faster cpu, 320 x 240, 640 x 480, 240 x 480, 240 x 240 touch screen, microphone and a memory card slot (SD or mini-SD).

Pocket RCT is Geotrust certified to run on Windows Mobile 5 or 6.x. Pocket RCT also complies with all Microsoft Windows Mobile logo certification requirements.

We most often recommend Hewlett-Packard Windows Mobile handhelds. See below for specifics.

Makes and models which Pocket RCT users report work fine with Pocket RCT:

  • Hewlett-Packard iPAQ models hx2000 series
  • HP iPAQ hx4700 or hx4705 (upgrade to Windows Mobile 5 required)
  • HP iPAQ 11x series. (requires an SD SentinelKey)
  • HP iPAQ rx195x series (requires an SD SentinelKey).

Current model best recommendations are HP iPAQ 110/111/112/114, hx2495, hx2795, hx4700 with Windows Mobile 5 or later. (we do not recommend the HP iPAQ 200 series, 210/211/212//214, see below).

The safest hardware for Pocket RCT compatiblity are Hewlett-Packard iPAQs with Windows Mobile 5 or later and a 320x240 or 640x480 size screen. These models are rated highest by RCT users.

Hewlett-Packard model number note: HP typically has several models which vary only by the last numerical digit (eg 110/111/114 or hx2490/hx2495). Invariably these models are exactly the same, the only difference is where they are marketed, or the difference in packaging.

We generally do not recommend Windows Mobile phones as very few of these phones work well with Pocket RCT.

For current users with Windows Mobile 4.2x or older who are updating to Windows Mobile 5 or 6 see RCT upgrade page.

Please note that the handheld computer is not included with our software; Pocket RCT is software only. Pocket RCT comes on an SD or CF card and installs simply and automatically after inserting the card. Installation takes about 20 seconds. We also provide several all-in-one software/hardware packages, see Packages page.

    **Recommendations:
200mhz or faster hardware will be fast enough for our software, but a faster machine will give you a more responsive CyberEar spinner and generally more responsive machine.

    Special cases:

  • Hewlett-Packard iPAQ hx4700 series. This model needs Windows Mobile 5 ROM update to run Pocket RCT.
  • We do not recommend the HP iPAQ 1700 series since it lacks user replaceable battery and has poor battery life.

    Not recommended:

  • Older Compaq (pre-HP) iPAQs with Pocket PC 3.0. These machine will run Pocket RCT but are becoming too old to be reliable.

    Not Supported:

  • HP iPAQ 210, 211 or 214 since they have a sound input interference issue.
  • HTC phones will not work, these HTC models have audio isues and do not support standard Windows Mobile recording api specs.
  • Dell Axim X3 is disqualified because of unreliable sound input.
  • PalmOS, Android, iPhone, iOS, iPad are not supported by Pocket RCT.
  • Motorola Q and similar PDA phones which do not have a touchscreen.
