Setting Windows Record Volume

Here's a tip for optimizing RCT on Windows 95/98: Occasionally I get a call from a new RCT/Win user who gets poor spinner response. The spinner is very small, and doesn't last very long, especially in the treble. Also, Chameleon 2 may not record very well (high variances, messages about poor response).

The solution is simple: The Windows sound card recording volume is too low and needs to be turned up.

To adjust the Windows sound card recording volume:

1. Double click on the small speaker icon near the lower right hand corner of your screen.

2. A Volume Control dialog box is displayed with several sliders (number varies). These all adjust different output volumes and balance - they are not what you want.

3. Choose OPTIONS and then PROPERTIES in the Volume Control menu.

4. In the section entitled "Adjust Volume for" click on the radio button next to RECORDING, then click OK.

5. Now you should see one or more sliders which adjust the recording volume which both CyberEar and Chameleon 2 use for listening. Leave the Balance(s) alone, its the vertical Volume slider(s) you want. You may need to hit the check box next to the word SELECT below the slider to enable it.

Some machines are fine with recording volume at 3/4 volume, but some need it pushed all the way up. You'll have to experiment to determine which volume slider will affect your particular machineÕs recording.

Try the "Recording" or "Microphone" volumes first, "Line-In" is only for external microphones.
